Day Twenty-Five – October 3, 2018
Happy Birthday Trista! Hope your day is very special!
We didn’t sleep that well last night – not sure why but this is another day and we are ready to see some more sights in Santa Fe. Looking at all the maps we get a bit confused and find ourselves on the outer route 66 rather than in town.
It looks like rain and there is a lot to do and see so we just keep going – heading for Santa Rosa. There will be another trip to Santa Fe we think.
This is an interesting path we are taking today; we didn’t expect to take the Pecos Trail!
Or the Santa Fe Trail!
There are a lot of cedar trees along this part – we wonder what they might be used for in this area.
We cross the Pecos River and are surprised to see it looks larger than the Rio Grande.
There are several places you can see the older road from a different road alignment.
Curious Signage
Once in Santa Rosa we find the Route 66 Auto Museum.
Really interesting place – and some of these classics are for sale!
Dale is particularly interested in this Edsel. No – we don’t have room in the car to bring it home!
But this grill is pretty cool – we might be able to fit that into the car!
Next stop is Tucumcari. Dale is now singing some song about the road to Tucumcari – he can’t understand why I don’t know this one. He never ceases to amaze me – he says he didn’t watch television and he didn’t listen to radio yet he knows all this random information. Weird.
The road gets really rough through here – it’s the old road.
There are times the GPS shows us on the railroad and not on any driving road.
Once in a while you can see the Interstate, Route 66, and the railroad at the same time!
There are places last night’s rain illustrates how the roads can wash out. Even signs to have us watch for water.
A one-way tunnel or two leaves us wondering what is on the other side. Rougher road.
And a rock formation that we pray will wait to fall after we leave the state!
Anyway, Tucumcari is supposed to have all sorts of quirky stuff on the streets – we can’t wait to see!
And Tucumcari does not disappoint as there are many sights – historic and famous hotels, restaurants, and one thing we can’t even begin to describe – this chrome-like car fin sitting on top of a pyramid.
We decide to have lunch here and find a cute little place.
As we leave Tucumcari there is a lot more to see!
And now we are out of New Mexico and into Texas.
In Adrian we reach the midway point between Santa Monica and Chicago. Already?
What a treasure and with so much potential – they should be marketing this place even more!
It’s getting late so we move on.
We are able to find the Cadillac Ranch.
Nice to see Elvis and Willie Nelson and John Wayne!
We are close to Amarillo for the night and find our hotel right next to the Quarter Horse Hall of Fame and Museum! Who knew?
