After breakfast and minimal re-packing, we are off to see a bit more of Corpus Christie. Quite an overcast and gloomy morning. There is a lot of industry here and seemingly a rail traffic hub.
For years we have watched for the Top Ten Waterparks of the Year and South Padre Island’s Schlitterbahn has been one of those top ten. They are only open on weekends at this time of year.
We head south to experience a long time dream.
More evidence of train traffic and working on the rail system as well as some industrial plants.
And then a mix of grain and oil!
Miles and miles of train transport and grain facilities.
And then the skies begin to brighten a bit and lo and behold:
The other industry that seems to be everywhere in Texas! And the South West.
Grain and either trains or trucks down this way! A lot of people in the South live in modular homes.
The skies continue to brighten and the terrain changes to something a little more tropical.
San Benito, home of Freddie Fender, and American Tejano – rock and roll singer best known for: “When the Next Teardrop Falls.”
We happen across a rodeo and a lot more traffic than we have been experiencing. This must be a big event for this area! But we have other plans for today.
Just when we think we are getting closer to South Padre.
But wait:
Our first glimpse of water for some time.
You must pass Port Isabel to reach the Island.
Our greeting committee!
We see the bridge ahead and the blue waters and blue sky! Can’t wait!
Finally, South Padre Island and the first of many eateries along this route.
Even before we find a place to stay we have to scope out the water park. We have arrived!
Now time to check into a hotel and find a place for lunch. The hotel recommends Captain Roy’s and it is
within walking distance.
Fresh shrimp tacos and gumbo! Very good – we walk back to the hotel via the CVS store for Diet caffeine Coke (you cannot find Pepsi here).
Our hotel has beach access – win – win! Who knew we would be playing in the Gulf in South Padre?
Sign in our hotel bathroom. Seriously?
Time to unpack and rest up for tomorrow and Schlitterbahn! Dreams of water rides ahead!
