Slept much better here – no shaking buildings! We decided to stay and explore the area – off to Galveston Island and Galveston. We hear Glen Campbell singing “Galveston” in our heads.
The day is warm and partly cloudy – the road is a two lane, winding snake-like, sand blown and pretty deserted as we start. The houses are mostly on stilts and few and far between, but quite colorful! Hard to see the beach because of the dunes – but when we do see beach – it is more brown and has lots of sticks and grassy material washed up on it.
There are several public access roads and trails to get to the beach – you can just drive right onto the beach!
To get to Galveston Island you need to cross a toll bridge – only $2.00
Once there we see lots of different venues and touristy stuff. Machinery on the beach was pumping sand and replenishing the beach – must be Spring Break Time soon.
But to see this first hand or get to the beach you need to park and pay. Interesting way to collect revenue.
The meter maids rode segues up and down the sidewalks.
Lunch at the Salt Grass Saloon – the history reports the cattle were driven up to the salt grass flats in the winter to eat the salty grass. This restaurant is on the original trail. We had “Rattlers” – shrimp stuffed giant jalapenos! YUM!
We spent one more night in Lake Jackson – hoping for another good nights sleep!
