Off to Albuquerque! This might be just a travel day – but look at all we saw!
Oil drills/just were just about everywhere.
We travel through small towns and miles and miles of farm land.
We have never seen so much livestock in one place – ever! There were several ranches/farms with hundreds of cattle.
The train traffic here is amazing! Trains in every direction hauling freight, LP, and lots of other stuff. The amount of traffic affords large maintenance crews a lot of work, as evidenced by miles and miles of replacing railroad ties.
Route 84 takes us to New Mexico:
At the Buddy Holly Museum they pointed out that Buddy recorded “That’ll Be The Day” in Clovis, NM, so we had to find Norman Petty’s recording studio. Unfortunately tours need to be arranged at least one month in advance and it appeared that someone is living in the building.
Onto the city of Portales, Route 70, where they had an F-111 on display, a “long range, terrain following, laser guided bomber.”
Next stop, Roswell, NM and the International UFO Museum and Research Center. As you enter town you see various sizes of green aliens in store fronts, porches, posters, billboards, and driveways. They are Everywhere!
Once inside the museum, after you sign in, there is a world map for people to stick a push pin to show where they are from – no one from the Rochester area, so we proudly stick the pin! At the end of every month they remove the pins and start over again.
July 8, 1947 report. There are rooms of letters, testimonials, denials, and photos of the event.
Then there are rooms dedicated to UFO/Alien movies, comic books, sci-fi creatures and animation.
Clearly one of the best films ever!! Michael Rennie is very convincing !!
According to a nurse, she witnessed doctors performing tests on the little people from space.
After spending so much time here we ask about a local place for lunch. The ladies in the UFO Gift Shop are excited to tell us that this is Green Chile’s Cheeseburger Day – don’t miss it!
Just around the block is Laura’s Café. Our waitress is very upbeat and happy to brag about the home-made foods they serve.
So delicious!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Next stop – Albuquerque! We come across several unidentifiable critters – deer? small elk? antelope? Help us identify this!
There are so many bugs flying against the car and windshield – it sounds like sleet or hail and looks like:
Every day we have to clean the windshield with our Windex and newly purchased Alabama WalMart glass scrapper.
The rolling hills of Route 285 take us through Vaugh and Encino and more livestock.
Our original goal was Albuquerque or Bust – here we come! At Cline’s Corners we gas up and take I-40. So very excited!
In our excitement of finally reaching our goal we neglected to photograph the “Welcome to Albuquerque” sign – or maybe there wasn’t one –
or
maybe it was “In Plain Sight”, or perhaps part of the Witness Protection Program – but it didn’t matter too much because we have arrived!
Quick explanation: “In Plain Sight” was a TV show about a Witness Protection Program in Albuquerque with Marshall and Mary (Federal Marshall’s) – funny like he is Marshall Marshall! Anyway, we want to find them!
